Design isn't disappearing; it's evolving. Lately, there has been a lot of "noise"—claims that design is dead. I've stopped reading these clichés. The truth is that as we integrate AI into our daily tasks, we are freeing up the cognitive space to be more creative and focused on what truly matters.
For a long time, designers were seen as "makers"—polishing pixels and tweaking screens. But the role is shifting toward the Curator. We are picking the right tools and components, ensuring they work together in a cohesive system.
The Shift
- Design Systems → Instead of making things from scratch, we work with existing tokens and improve them.
- AI & Automation → AI handles the repetitive mechanical tasks, allowing us to focus on high-level design decisions.
- Business Awareness → Understanding why something works is now more important than just how it looks.
Curating isn't enough on its own. If we only curate, we stop innovating. The best designers balance both—knowing when to follow the system and when to break the rules to solve a unique problem. We create when needed, curate when it makes sense, and always think about the bigger picture.
